Copy Trading vs Managed Accounts: Key Differences Explained
Copy trading and managed accounts both let someone else's decisions drive your trading. This guide compares how they differ on control, effort, cost and risk.

Two ways to let someone else trade for you
If you want exposure to the forex market without placing every trade yourself, the two most common options are copy trading and a managed account. Both rely on another person's or system's decisions. The difference is in who does the work, who holds the controls, and how much is left for you to manage.
Neither option is risk-free, and neither is automatically better. The right choice depends on how hands-on you want to be and what you want to be able to check.

How copy trading works
With copy trading, you open your own account with a broker or platform that offers a copy feature. You browse a list of traders, choose one or more to follow, and the platform automatically copies their trades into your account in proportion to your balance.
You keep the settings in your hands. You decide who to follow, how much to allocate, and whether to add limits such as a maximum loss. You can usually stop copying at any time. In return, you carry the work of choosing and monitoring traders, and you are relying on the platform's copying to work smoothly.

How a managed account works
With a managed account, a manager trades a dedicated account on your behalf. You fund the account and agree the terms, and the manager makes the trading decisions. You do not pick individual traders or set copy ratios; you hand over the trading to one manager and watch the result.
At GrowX, each client has their own dedicated trading account with a third-party broker, and you watch it live through an investor (read-only) login. The How it works page covers the setup, and our guide What is a managed forex account? goes into more detail.

Key differences at a glance
Here is how the two approaches usually compare. Individual providers vary, so always read their terms.
- Who decides: in copy trading you choose which traders to follow; in a managed account the manager decides.
- Effort: copy trading needs ongoing research and adjustment; a managed account mainly needs you to monitor and review.
- Setup: copy trading runs through a platform's copy feature; a managed account is set up by the manager with a broker.
- Visibility: both can be transparent, but check whether you get a real-time view of the actual account, such as an investor login.
- Costs: copy trading may involve platform charges, spreads and a share of profit for the followed trader; managed accounts usually charge a performance fee, a management fee or both.
- Execution: copied trades can open at slightly different prices from the original; in a managed account the trades are placed directly on your account.

Comparing costs fairly
Costs are easy to underestimate in both models. With copy trading, add up any subscription, the followed trader's share, and the effect of spreads and slippage on copied trades. With a managed account, look at exactly how the performance fee is calculated and whether there is any fixed fee as well.
GrowX charges 30% of the profit of each profitable closed trade and no fee on losing trades, with each trade calculated on its own. See the fees page for the current wording and the guide on how performance fees work for worked examples.

Risks that apply to both
Changing who presses the button does not change the market. Leveraged forex and CFD trading can lose money quickly, in copy trading and in managed accounts alike. Past results do not guarantee future results, and a good track record can be followed by losses.
Both models also carry operational risk: the broker, the platform or the manager can make mistakes or have outages. That is why live, verifiable results matter. At GrowX you can follow trading as it happens at growxfx.com/live.

Which one suits you?
Copy trading may suit you if you enjoy research, want to pick and switch traders yourself, and are comfortable managing settings and limits. A managed account may suit you if you prefer to hand the trading to one manager, keep a read-only view of your own dedicated account, and review results rather than run them.
Whichever you choose, start with an amount you can afford to lose, read the terms in full, and make sure you can see the account yourself. If you want to explore GrowX, read the FAQ, check the fees, and create an account when you are ready. Questions are welcome at [email protected].
Frequently asked questions
Is copy trading the same as a managed account?
No. In copy trading you choose traders to follow and a platform copies their trades into your account. In a managed account, a manager trades a dedicated account for you and you watch the results.
Which is safer, copy trading or a managed account?
Neither is safe in the sense of being risk-free. Both involve leveraged trading, and you can lose some or all of your deposit. Compare transparency, costs and terms rather than looking for a safe option.
Can I watch a GrowX managed account live?
Yes. Each client has a dedicated trading account and can watch it live through an investor (read-only) login. Results are also shown live at growxfx.com/live.
